Gene was born in Randolph County to Blanche New. He grew up in Liberty, NC and started working at the young age of 14. He worked as an upholster for 59 years at Gregsons in Liberty. Gene also served four years in the United States Airforce. During his time of service he and his wife, Betty moved to Austin, Texas and eventually moved back to Liberty where he spent the rest of his life. Gene was a devoted man, daddy, and pawpaw who enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking hush puppies and bluegrass music. He was a member of Holly's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and enjoyed cooking with the men's committee at the church and helping the young kids cross the road at Bible School. His love for God showed with his love and caring heart for others. Welcoming him to his heavenly home are his wife, Betty Lois Langley Pugh, mother, Blanche Pugh New, and his grandmother, Alva Pugh.

Gene's legacy will live on through his daughters, Mary Jean Williams, and husband, Greg, Wanda Laughlin, and husband, C.W. He was referred to as Pawpaw by his grandchildren, Elizabeth Jarman, and husband, Barrett, Amanda Wilson, Brooke Labashousky, and husband, Matt. His cherished name was Olepaw by his great-grandchildren, Ava Collins, Baiden Jarman, Pearl Jarman, Natalie York, Lindsay York, and Conner Wilson. Also his sister, Reva Jacklin, and husband, Harold, his only niece, Karen Teears, and husband, Mark, as well as many other family and friends.
