Joseph Rufus "Joe" Powers, 76, of Bennett, died Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care in Pinehurst.
Funeral Services, 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 6, 2018, at Fall Creek Baptist Church, Bennett.
Officiating, Rev. Edwin Moore.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Joe was a native of Durham County, retired manager of the student store at Duke University and a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. Joe was a volunteer at the Duke Children's Classic golf tournament for twenty years where he was chairman of the food committee. He also won volunteer of the year in 2000. Joe was a Boy Scoutmaster for four years during which time his son Lundy was awarded his Eagle. He was a deacon at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Durham during the 60's and later when he moved to Chatham County he became chairman of the deacons at Fall Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Payton Rigsbee Powers, sisters, Ruth Phipps, Jacqueline Crawford.
Survivors: wife, Ann Bennett Powers, of the home, daughter, Deirdre Powers "DeeDee" Dean of Bennett , son, Joseph Lundy Powers, of Juneau, Alaska, sisters, Kay Simpson, of Carthage, Joyce Powers-Bissette, of Bennett, grandchildren, Catherine Powers, Cassie-Anna Dean, Caroline Powers, Trinity Dean, Lydia Powers, Brianna Powers, Phillip Dean.
Visitation, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Saturday, Fall Creek Baptist Church, Bennett and other times at the residence.
