John C. "Chris" Abernathy

John Colon "Chris" Abernathy, 71, of 145 Spencer Street, Randleman, died Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at his residence with his wife, Judy, by his side.

Services will be held at a later date.

Chris was native of Avery County. He was a 1963 graduate of Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC, and had a college degree in Law Enforcement.  In the late 60's, Chris was elected by the NRO, to secretly go into enemy territory to rescue p.o.w.'s.  He was a meat manager with Piggly Wiggly and Food Lion. After retirement from Food Lion, Chris went back into Law Enforcement, working at the Prison Unit in Asheboro, where he fully retired from work. Chris was an avid hunter, loved sitting out in the cold woods, hunting deer and squirrel. He loved playing golf and tennis with long-time friend, John Coble of Climax, NC.  He enjoyed NASCAR races at the track with Floyd Layne, a close friend for many years from Summerfield, NC, and loved his annual Bike-Week with best friend, Edward Moran of Randleman, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Adell Abernathy, aunt, Louise Wentz and father-in-law, Jesse Stuart.

Survivors: wife of 41 years, Judy Abernathy, of the home, son, Travis "Bugs" Stout, of Ramseur, brother, Ray Abernathy, of Asheboro, niece, Ashley Abernathy, of Greensboro, nephew, Ryan Abernathy, of Tallahassee, FL, mother-in-law, Susie D. Stuart of Ramseur and his beloved cat, Prissy that gave Chris much love and devoted attention.
